Language – The Carrier of Indigenous Teachings

According to my perspective, one’s own culture, traditions, and language play an important role in shaping our teaching pedagogies and are the foundation skills of individual learning. Incorporating teaching practices related to indigenous values and culture is beneficial to promote meaningful learning among students (Howe et al. 2021). Therefore, I strongly believe that this approach will help create an inclusive learning environment for students and a sense of belonging to their culture, language, and traditions. Moreover, it will enhance curiosity among students to know more about their cultural background, beliefs, and language. Furthermore, being a teacher, I will encourage my students to engage with indigenous communities to learn and develop respect for Indigenous languages and values to have a deeper understanding of one’s cultural background and incorporate their insights into educational practices.

The discussion on the topic “All My Relations” brought about by Joanne Brown sheds light on the significance of familial bonds, language, culture, traditions, and even self-care. Therefore, I opine that by respecting the interconnections among various disciplines, family values and cultural beliefs I can foster an inclusive learning environment for my students of diverse cultural backgrounds. It will help to develop respect and empathy among students for each other and their ancestors. Also, Joanne Brown highlights the importance of languages as a carrier of traditional and cultural values. Thus, including activities in class such as indigenous games, stories and guest speakers will be helpful for students to develop understanding and a sense of belonging to their roots. Apart from that, the interconnections between all living beings and the environment should be considered to develop a love for nature. Overall, I believe that embedding indigenous teaching practices into the curriculum is beneficial for creating awareness about challenges faced by indigenous communities and shaping our perspective towards life and our own identity.
