Inclusion – The Utmost Priority in Educational Settings

According to my perspective, Inclusive education aims to provide equal opportunities for all students irrespective of their disabilities and cultural background. Firstly, I believe that to support the academic and social-emotional needs of learners with disabilities, educators can incorporate Universal Design for Learning principles where students have equal access to instructional materials, different learning methods and multimedia resources to ensure a positive learning environment for all students. Secondly, the teachers can implement social-emotional learning to ensure a safe and supportive environment to empower students for meaningful learning and foster liberty to express themselves. Furthermore, collaborative problem-solving, acknowledging the special needs of learners and incorporating culturally responsive teaching strategies by educators into the curriculum is beneficial to overcome barriers that hinder inclusion and create a safe space where students’ opinions are heard and respected. In my home country, I have never seen privilege given to non-binary genders in educational settings, they often experience discrimination because of lack of inclusion in educational settings. Therefore, I believe LGBTQ students often face various challenges such as discrimination based on their body language and gender, bullying and lack of representation in educational institutions. Educators can foster inclusive environments for LGBTQ students by incorporating inclusive practices and policies such as anti-bullying rules in educational settings, gender-neutral facilities and inclusion of a curriculum which describes the history, experiences, and contributions of LGBTQ communities to society. Moreover, access to support and resources related to sexual orientation and gender identity such as sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression (SOGIE)- inclusive curriculum should be included in educational settings, to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for students (Russell et al.,2021). In this way, students will develop respect for LGBTQ communities which in turn motivates LGBTQ students to come up with their views, diminish hesitation and feel valued in classrooms. Apart from that, teachers can provide counselling sessions and foster allyship which involves motivating students and staff members to become allies for LGBTQ students and including the pronoun ‘they’ other than ‘he and she’ to specify the gender, develop awareness among LGBTQ students of their rights in school and providing equal opportunities for access to educational resources at global level.

  1. Hi Amanjot,
I strongly appreciate your whole topic about the importance of inclusive education for all students. Educators can contribute a lot to creating an inclusive environment for students by implementing social-emotional learning such as self-awareness, self-management, empathy, and relationship-building. Teachers can integrate SEL into academic instruction through cooperative learning activities, conflict resolution strategies, and mindfulness practices. I agree with you about offering individual or group counseling services and access to mental health resources for students who need additional support. Nowadays, LGBTQ is a challenging issue, and LGBTQ students face different difficult situations. An inclusive curriculum should be included which includes sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression so that students will develop respect for LGBTQ communities which in turn motivates LGBTQ students to come up with their views, diminish hesitation, and feel valued in classrooms. We should raise our awareness to support and create an inclusive educational system throughout the whole world which I got from your writing.

  2. I appreciate your perspective about inclusive education. Through the creation of safe and secure emotional attachments for all students, including those with disabilities, inclusive education plays a critical role in attachment formation. Inclusive classrooms lay the groundwork for strong interactions between students and instructors as well as between peers and peers by fostering a sense of acceptance and belonging. Students with disabilities can engage completely in classroom activities and relationships in these settings, and they will receive the necessary support to develop socially and emotionally. Inclusive education fosters a caring environment where kids feel valued and accepted, which supports the formation of healthy attachments by lowering stigma and fostering understanding. Being a counselor I myself experienced how important it is to create inclusive education, that moreover includes attachment among teachers and the students. While conducting special education session I witnessed, children with impairments with the tailored help they require, enhances their emotional health and attachment security. Additionally, inclusive classrooms seek to lessen stigma and foster understanding and empathy in pupils, which improves each child’s social integration and attachment experiences.
